16 range stops

With a wide range of 16 stops*, BURANO takes beautiful, low-noise images in virtually any lighting condition. The camera's wide dynamic range professionally captures everything from highlights to shadows with excellent color reproduction, giving operators maximum flexibility in color correction.

Wide range of colors

BURANO features Sony's proprietary S-Gamut/S-Gamut.Cine wide color space, which, as in VENICE 2, covers a gamut that exceeds BT.2020 and DCI-P3. S-Log3 and X-OCN also greatly increase creative flexibility in post-processing. Because BURANO offers the same color accuracy as VENICE 2, the two cameras can easily be used together for a seamless and efficient post-processing workflow.

Double ISO base

Cinematographers around the world love the VENICE 2's ability to switch sensor sensitivity for clean images even in low light conditions. The BURANO supports the same dual ISO 800 and 3200 baselines as the VENICE 2. This means crisp, low-noise images whether you're shooting in a brightly lit room (ISO 800) or in challenging, dimly lit conditions (ISO 3200). With BURANO, you can shoot stunning images using only candlelight.

Internal 16-bit X-OCN LT and XAVC H recording

Despite its compact size, BURANO offers X-OCN LT* internal recording, as well as our new XAVC H format and the proven industry standard XAVC-I. X-OCN is Sony's compressed RAW format that records everything an 8.6K sensor can capture into a linear file with a 16-bit wide-range scene full of rich tonal gradations. X-OCN LT's high efficiency reduces storage requirements and accelerates file transfer times for 8K content, providing a post-production workflow comparable to a 4K project.

BURANO also supports 10-bit S-Log3 with 1200 Mbps XAVC HI HQ recording and 800 Mbps XAVC HI SQ recording for 8K30p image quality. This provides even greater data savings and faster post-processing workflow.

New camera features for ready-to-use shots

BURANO offers four new images - Warm, Cool, Vintage and Teal and Orange - to choose from alongside the established s709 and 709 (800) images in Cine EI mode. Creatively customized to fit typical shooting scenarios, they give the operator a choice of distinctive, eye-catching images at the touch of a button. What's more, LUT data from shoots can be embedded into the metadata of these clips for an efficient color workflow.

Flexible lens mount

PL Lens mount

BURANO comes with an industry-standard PL lens mount and is compatible with Super 35mm and full-frame PL lenses (spherical and anamorphic). The lens mount includes contacts that support Cooke/i technology, and lens information is recorded as metadata, frame by frame.

E-mount lever lock type

E mount lenses can be attached by removing the PL mount adapter. The E mount (lever-lock type) allows users to change lenses by turning the locking ring rather than the lens itself. This means that in most cases the lens support fittings do not need to be removed, saving time during production. Sony's ever-expanding range of E mount lenses, from ultra-wide-angle to ultra-telephoto lenses, is supported by BURANO's advanced image stabilization and autofocus capabilities, ideal for mobile and single-operator projects.

Anamorphic lens compression function

BURANO comes with an anamorphic unloading function as standard. The monitoring menu gives a choice between 1.3x/1.5x*/2.0x depending on the magnification of the anamorphic lens. The result can be seen on the monitor LCD and on external monitors with FHD resolution. The camera's monitor output supports SDI or HDMI for X-OCN shooting and HDMI for non-X-OCN content.

Stabilization in housing with PL mount lenses

BURANO is the world's first cinema camera to support Integrated Optical Image Stabilization (IBIS) for virtually any attached lens, including for the first time PL. The new compact image stabilization system was originally developed for the Alpha series of mirrorless cameras. Featuring a gyroscopic sensor and control algorithm, it compensates for camera shake even when shooting handheld while walking. The stabilization is so effective that in many cases it eliminates the need for additional equipment.

Stabilization is even higher with E mount lenses, allowing you to take more complex shots without blurring. Camera shake data can be transferred to post-production for precise alignment with computer graphics and phasing.

Electronic variable ND filter

Sony's unique electronic variable ND filter has been redesigned to be both smaller and compatible with the built-in image stabilization mechanism. It can smoothly and continuously change its density from 0.6 (1/4) to 2.1 (1/128). Since physical ND filters are no longer needed, operators can adjust the electronic filter density by simply rotating the ND dial. Operators can maintain a constant depth of field by adjusting the electronic ND filter and aperture control together. Continuous or incremental changes can be selected with the ND STEP/VARIABLE switch depending on the application. The [Auto ND] function automatically adjusts the filter density to ensure proper exposure, effectively allowing you to use the ND filter as an alternative to Auto IRIS.

Shoot on the move with fast hybrid autofocus*

BURANO's full-frame sensor makes it easy to track fast-moving subjects with incredibly sharp focus, even when using a wide lens aperture to maintain a shallow depth of field. The advanced Rapid Hybrid AF system, originally developed by Sony Alpha camera engineers, combines Phase AF for fast and accurate subject tracking with Contrast AF for exceptional focusing accuracy. In addition, Face Detection intelligently recognizes and captures human faces.

A dedicated 627-point phase AF sensor covers approximately 88.7% of the entire image area, providing consistently accurate and responsive AF tracking even at shallow depth of field.

Sensor autofocus with subject recognition using artificial intelligence*

Our built-in AI processing unit recognizes not only the position of the eyes, but also accurately detects the position of a person's torso and head. The AF object recognition function automatically draws a frame around people's faces when it detects them. Human pose estimation technology recognizes body and head position, so you can even track a subject who is turned away from the camera or wearing a mask.

Touch a person to focus on them, and the camera accurately tracks that person. Even in difficult situations, such as when the head is down or hair covers the face, the camera accurately captures the eyes, so operators can focus accurately even in the most challenging circumstances.

Two CFexpress type B slots

The new Sony CFexpress VPG400* card delivers reliable shooting at exceptionally high data rates, including X-OCN LT recording in full 8K resolution.

Dual BURANO media slots allow retransmission and simultaneous recording**, while versatile CFexpress Type B media is convenient for backup and data transfer in the field. An optional SD card slot is available for storing proxy data and camera setup information.

Smaller, lighter, stronger

At 2.9 kg including PL adapter, the BURANO is about 33 % lighter than Sony's top-of-the-line VENICE 2 digital cinema camera, which is a significant advantage when shooting handheld or shoulder-mounted, as well as when used with a pendant or drone. , cranes and booms.

The layout of all buttons and keys has been carefully considered for the new compact size and the possibility of individual or team operation. The main cinematography controls are on the operator switch side and can be illuminated for use in the dark. The camera has signal indicators in three positions, so operators can check status from four different directions. There is also an optional audible alarm to start and stop recording.

Despite its compact size, the BURANO is designed to Sony's highest standards of reliability, with a body made of durable magnesium alloy and aluminum for shooting in the harshest conditions. Recording for hours on end is no problem thanks to a highly efficient cooling system that is completely isolated from the image sensor and other dust-sensitive components.

Universal monitor

BURANO is equipped with a 3.5 type LCD monitor that can be freely customized to suit your shooting style. A viewfinder magnifier can be attached, autofocus is controlled by touching the screen, and the display can also be mounted in various ways to adapt it to the style of the project.

Smart Grip Flexibility

The FS7/FX9's popular FS7/FX9 telescopic handle with handle control has transformed shooting on the go, and now with the GP-VR100* we've made it even better for BURANO. The handle length is easily adjusted by turning the knob and the quick-release lever adjusts the angle. Once perfectly set up for shooting from the shoulder or waist, Sony's Grip remote control puts all the important controls at your fingertips with Zoom, Start/Stop and a number of Assign controls, including a dial that you can use to adjust the aperture.
