Description of ARRI Ultra Prime cinema lenses

ARRI Ultra Prime lenses have the widest range of focal lengths of any 35mm constant focal length lens available and meet every cinematic need, from the unique Ultra Prime 8R ultra-wide-angle lens to the best telephoto lens designed specifically for cinematography, the Ultra Prime 180mm, giving you the flexibility to get the coverage you want.

Arri ultra prime lenses

ARRI Ultra Prime lenses maintain excellent image quality even when focusing closely across the entire Super 35 frame. They are lightweight standard aperture lenses that are optically perfectly matched to the lightweight Master Prime lenses.

Ultra Prime lenses were developed as a result of years of cooperation between the companies Arri и Carl Zeiss in Germany, manufactured ZEISS and sold exclusively ARRI. A large team of mathematicians and physicists translated the latest scientific research; The goal was to create a lens that, for the first time, fully integrates all the optimal features of the best lenses - Ultra Prime.

Focus, contrast, color saturation, color consistency, color uniformity, compactness and high luminosity with very little aperture-induced focus shift are the characteristics that Ultra Prime lenses were designed and built to optimize. In addition, the optimization list also included performance at close focus, whereas traditionally traditional optical lens designs have been weak.

Lenses generally achieve maximum performance at the focus setting for which they have been designed and optimized, usually infinity. Less than infinity will result in reduced optical performance, increased curvature of the image area, and increased aperture aberration. So, because of this reduction in peak performance, lens manufacturers mechanically limit the minimum focus setting at close range so that the user cannot move the lens too far into the lower performance region. Ultra Prime lenses, however, operate a little differently. ARRI and Carl Zeiss have developed and perfected an effective remedy against this undesirable phenomenon, it's called Floating Elements.

Floating elements or floating lens elements do exactly what it sounds like: it is a technological design in which groups of lenses move simultaneously relative to each other during focusing, thereby correcting the curvature of the image area as it moves. Wow, the floating element design has a significant impact on the overall optical design of the lens, as well as the high-precision design of the now mechanical components of the lens. Both of these unique technologies are implemented throughout the Ultra Prime lens lineup, providing unprecedented outstanding close focusing and minimum focusing distance.

Typically, lenses change the distance of the entire internal optical assembly with respect to the film plane during focusing. In real-world applications, this design has serious deficiencies in optical performance, such as displacement of the aperture and focus mechanism, and displacement of the physical center of gravity.

The Panny Hire LLC Ultra Primes is devoid of these major optical disadvantages thanks to its ingenious internal focusing design: the external position of the physical lens remains completely constant throughout the entire focusing range. Not only that, instead of moving the entire internal optical assembly with a large drive mechanism inside the lens, only very small and incredibly light lens groups are moved, this provides significantly increased focusing sensitivity and precise control.

New materials have been developed specifically for ARRI Ultra Prime lenses to improve stray light suppression and color saturation. The end result is pure and saturated colors even at full aperture, something never heard of before.

The most important characteristic of the optical design was the high MTF value of 10 pairs of lines per mm. This frequency range is directly related to the clarity of the actual image. The entire Ultra Prime lens lineup has an MTF of over 90% at this spatial frequency, providing incredibly uniform brightness across the entire image area and enhancing image sharpness and clarity.

Colored trim? There is no noticeable color fringing whatsoever. For the first time in the history of lens design, ARRI Ultra Prime lenses have been corrected for close focus / minimum focus and infinity, not just infinity (which is usually the only problem). The end result of the above design technology is an optical standard of the highest quality and performance throughout the entire focusing range.

The Arri Ultra Prime have an all-new aperture design that is virtually free of hysteresis distortion. Featuring a nine-blade design (135mm is ten blades) with thinner, rounded aperture contours, it delivers thinner and more rounded shallow bokeh instead of angular bokeh. The end result is a more natural and less mechanical image of blurred/shallow light sources.

Key Features of ARRI Ultra Prime

  • Covers Super-35mm format, maintains high contrast and resolution even at close focus.
  • The optically matched fixed focal length lens complements the Master Prime series of fast lenses; Ultra Prime lenses are color-matched to each other and to the rest of the ARRI lens spectrum.
  • T* XP multi-layer anti-reflective coating reduces glare and internal reflections.
  • Lightweight, rugged, compact design with a maximum aperture of T1.9.
  • Minimal chromatic aberrations and breathing
